Sprouts Program

Sprouts is part of the Seattle Giving Garden Network (SGGN). Our Sprouts Greenhouses grow thousands of vegetable starts each year and distribute them free to Giving Gardeners, helping them get a strong start to the growing season.

After more than 12 years of operation, our beloved Ballard Sprouts location closed in 2024. We’re now excited to share that three greenhouse sites across Seattle are continuing the work of Sprouts:

How It Works

Each Sprouts greenhouse produces around 5,000 vegetable starts every spring. Every site has a Volunteer Coordinator and a Farmer who guide the growing process, supported by an incredible team of volunteers.

Seeds are started in mid-February and nurtured until they’re ready for April distribution. We currently grow 19 different crops, including several varieties of lettuce, chard, and a wide range of brassicas—such as pak choy, mustard greens, kale, collards, cabbage, broccoli, and other Asian greens.

Seedlings are transplanted five per pot to make them easy to distribute. When plants are nearly ready, Giving Gardeners receive a “heads-up” email, followed by specific dates, times, and pickup locations to select what they need for their gardens.

To learn more about how we grow sprouts, read the Sprouts Greenhouse Manual.

Preorder Sprouts

Sprouts greenhouses take preorders from our Giving Gardens to help them with our planning, using an online form.  If you used the form, you will e contacted by your greenhouse to arrange a pick-up.

Our 2026 preorder window is now closed.  You will be notified by email of our general distribution date sand times once they are set in April.  Email info@sggn.org if you have feedback or questions about crops and/or the distribution of Sprouts.  We value your input!

Volunteer in a Greenhouse

Interested in helping out with our greenhouse projects? Sprouts volunteers are active from February through May, supporting seed starting, transplanting, and plant care.

Depending on location, volunteer opportunities may include a weekly morning or afternoon shift and/or weekend work parties.

If you’d like to get involved, please email info@sggn.org and let us know which greenhouse you’re interested in. A Volunteer Coordinator will reach out in January with more details!
